Legacy Loop
A project request with Great Outdoors Colorado
Trail systems are the fuel that stimulates our community. Trail systems bring communities together. Trail systems provide a Sunday stroll, a community bike ride, or even a 10k race. Our unbeatable access to our natural world is made possible through the various trail systems we have in place.
Despite our intricate and plentiful access, Colorado Springs currently lacks trail access through and around the heartbeat of our city, downtown. To combat this, The Greenway Fund has partnered with other organizations to stimulate change, create recreational opportunities, and build a much needed gateway to downtown.
The Legacy Loop, a project request with Great Outdoors Colorado (GOCO), seeks to improve our recreation trails as a way to bring people into downtown Colorado Springs and to, what we love, the water at Monument Creek. It’s all in the details…
Why is this project imporant? Nearly 375,000 current users recreate on the already existing trails. Over 25,000 residents live within a half mile of the proposed project. The project is a way to connect, create, and protect a community value.

- Total project cost is over $4.4 million dollars
- 22% of the funding would come from a GOCO grant request (decision announced by GOCO Board on June
19) - 3 underpasses that will connect us to the water and already existing trails
- A 10k course with no street crossings for safe commuting and recreation
- The new Fontanero Trailhead will add parking spaces to convert a blighted parking lot into a valuable amenity
at a previously unused I-25 exit
